How do you work in a respectful and useful way with people whose cultural background is different to your own? In this episode, Chris Dolman interviews Nellie Anderson from the Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitation Service (STTARS) in South Australia. Nellie has worked extensively with children and adults from a refugee background who have experienced torture and trauma prior to their arrival to Australia. She reflects on what she has learned about culturally competent practice including her own learnings as well as what is supportive at an organisation level.

In this episode you will learn:

  • What’s most important when meeting with a family from a different cultural background for the first time (01:17)
  • The value of respecting local knowledge in culturally competent practice (10:57
  • How to approach practice when you know little about the family’s culture (18:19)
  • What’s important in engaging children from different cultural backgrounds (24:26)
