Practical strategies to support culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities

‘I recently completed your course to fulfill my organisation’s professional development (PD) related to supporting CALD communities. It was refreshing to complete PD that was so relevant to my clinical caseload, with practical strategies to incorporate into my sessions and an easy-to-follow format. I’m now looking forward to completing more PD hours!’

– Mel, speech pathologist

We loved getting this feedback from a practitioner who recently completed our Understanding children’s mental health in culturally diverse communities course.

Emerging Minds has created a learning pathway with two free online courses for practitioners seeking to learn more about how to support CALD children, families and communities – and complete PD hours!

The CALD pathway explores practice considerations that support culturally responsive and inclusive work with families. It unpacks why exploring a family’s migration and acculturation journeys, cultural identities, and cultural family practices are key parts of effective practice. It will also help you consider how cultural humility and reflective practice can help you combat racism and unconscious bias.

Learning outcomes relate to building your understanding and skills across a range of key areas, including:
  • child mental health in a culturally diverse context
  • key domains of cultural considerations when working with families
  • cultural curiosity and the importance of exploring a child and family’s migration and acculturation journeys
  • highlighting and enabling families’ wisdom and practices
  • challenging and reflecting on your own language and unintentional cultural biases; and
  • developing community connections to build trust with families and improve their access to support services.
