A guide for parents and families of LGB and gender diverse young people

Beyond Blue, Australia

Related to Anxiety, Bullying, Depression

This online multimedia guide called ‘Families like mine’ provides practical advice for families of young gender diverse people, same-sex attracted and bisexual people, and those questioning their sexuality or gender identity.

‘The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures highlight that lesbian, gay and bisexual Australians are three times more likely to have depression than heterosexuals and twice as likely to have an anxiety condition, largely because of the discrimination they experience. The guide was developed because research shows that family support can have a significant positive impact on the mental health of young lesbian, gay, bisexual or gender diverse people.

This guide is separated into two primary sections:

  • For families of young people who are lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) or who are questioning their sexuality
  • For families of young people who are gender diverse, transgender or questioning their gender

Both sections discuss the following topics:

  • ‘Families of children or young people who are LGB, questioning their sexuality or gender diverse’
  • ‘Coming out in families’
  • ‘The power of families – supporting your child or loved one’
  • ‘Taking care of yourself’
  • ‘Myths and realities’
  • ‘Key messages’
